The Herring Trail: Sponsored Walk

On Sunday 29th May 2022 we will walk part of the Herring Trail. Starting our exciting, week-long celebration of Dunbar Harbour’s history and its longstanding fishing industry.

A beautiful 13km walk, over rugged land. Land which is believed to have been predominantly used during the 18thand 19th century, when the herring industry was strong, although records of the inland fish trade go as far back as mid-17th century!

Amazingly, this challenging and long route was used by people bringing stocks of salted herring home for winter use and by fishwives, who carried huge creels of herring to the markets in Lauder. Selling the fish caught by their fathers, grandfathers, husbands, and sons in Dunbar.

Have an old shawl or blanket lurking in your wardrobe? Why not dress as a fisher wife, or fisherman of old for the occasion!
