Workshop – Top-Grafting Fruit Trees

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm April 26, 2026
Learn how to change the variety of an already established apple, pear or plum tree. Suitable for home, allotment or orchard growers.
Join Danny Wight at Tyninghame Organic Orchard to learn how to change the variety of an established fruit tree. By grafting a twig of the new variety (the scion) onto the original tree (the stock) you can change your apple, pear or plum varieties from ones you don’t like to ones you do. There are several reasons why you might want to do this: to suit your taste, to get a more productive variety, to improve cross-pollination, to modify cropping dates, etc..Of the many forms of grafting, we will focus on cleft grafting.
The workshop will cover -
- The principles of grafting fruit trees
- The reasons why one might want to change varieties
- The key steps in cleft grafting
- Viewing previously cleft grafted apple and plum trees
- A demonstration of cleft grafting an established apple tree
Spaces are limited, so be sure to reserve your spot today

Directions, parking and transport
The workshop will be held in Tyninghame Organic Orchard which neighbours Tyninghame Community Farm (TCF). If you haven't been to the Community Farm before, you will find us on the A198 just north of Tyninghame. The postcode is EH42 1XN.We will meet up in the TCF packing shed beside the car park.
We encourage people to use the 120 Lothian bus if possible, which stops at the Lawhead junction just before/after Tyninghame Village. The 120 bus timetable is here.
We have 6 car parking spaces at the farm and space for 3 cars on the roadside. If using roadside parking, please be careful of the fast-moving traffic on the A198 when getting in and out of your car.
If you alight from the bus in the village, or park there, you can walk up off-road through the orchard. Go to the T junction with the A198, turn up hill towards North Berwick, immediately after the yard with paling fence turn left into fallow field, then immediately turn right and follow path to tall narrow gate into bottom of orchard. Walk past pond, up the left (west) side of the orchard, through small pasture field above, and then into the market garden. The packing shed is beside the car park on right (east). Please shut all gates and keep dogs on leads (free range poultry).
