1:30 pm - 4:30 pm September 6, 2026
Belhaven Community Garden
Belhaven Community Hospital
Dunbar, EH42 1TR

A hands-on workshop on summer pruning that will focus on pears and apples, with some reference to plums, primarily focusing on bush-trained trees but also some espaliers. We will run through the principles of pruning and why to prune in the summer: to enhance ripening and maximise fruit production in the following year. Note: ideally summer pruning is done in August but this was the first date available for the workshop.

It will be led by two experienced fruit growers, Naomi Barnes, Belhaven Community Garden and Daniel Wight, Tyninghame Org. Orchard. Numbers are restricted to 16 so please book promptly if keen!

Wear suitable clothing for outdoors (there is no shelter!), stout footwear, and bring a drink (unfortunately no mains water). If you have a pair, please bring sharp bypass (not anvil) secateurs.

Directions, parking and transport

We will gather at the picnic table in the Belhaven Community Garden field. The Garden is a short walk from the X7 and 120 bus routes (nearest stop being the Old Police Station). If driving best to park at back of the Cala estate on Bayview Circus road, near the entrance to the old hospital on Beveridge Row, and walk through the old Belhaven hospital grounds.

Ticket Pricing

Tyninghame Community Farm operates a solidarity pricing model for our workshops (and veg boxes). We encourage those who can to pay a little more, and those who can’t are encouraged to pay a discounted rate. A sliding scale helps create a slightly fairer food system.
