Remembrance Sunday
10:30 am - 11:30 am November 13, 2022
Royal British Legion
The Dunbar Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland invites all residents of Dunbar & District to our annual Remembrance Sunday event to be held Sunday 13th November 2022.
The event starts with a parade setting off towards the Parish war memorial from outside Legion Close on the High Street at 10.30.
The parade will be led by the RBLS Dunbar Pipe Band and include our Standard Bearer with escort of military Veterans followed by the Scottish & Northern Irish Yeomanry, Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, RNLI & Coastguard, Girl Guides, Brownies, Scouts, Cubs & Beavers.
The Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian will Take the Salute at The Glebe enroute.
Spectators are welcome to view the parade and follow us to the Parish war memorial on Marine Road or just meet us there as preferred.
The Police will operate a rolling road closure supported by our Safety Stewards who are kindly provided by Dunbar United Football Club.
Military Veterans not wishing to march are most welcome to fall-in with their comrades at the war memorial. ALL Veterans and family are welcome to join us for lunch after the parade (Lasagne, garlic bread and side salad). There is no need to be a Legionnaire and there will be no charge for lunch. However, expect some inter-services banter and an invite to our Veterans Breakfasts which are held 10.00 each last Saturday of every month. To help with catering please pre-book by emailing branchsecretary@rbldunbar.co.uk If you are a Veteran, don’t be shy!
This year, the Order of Service will include a dedication to a new name on the war memorial, Private George Shearlaw Young. Thanks to the selfless research work of Irene Leslie and Will Collin, Private Young will finally be included in the Act of Remembrance.
Following the two-minute silence at 11.00 and multi-denominational Service conducted by local Padres, the wreath laying will commence. The Lord Lieutenant will lay a wreath on behalf of HM The King followed by the RBLS Dunbar President, local Councillors, parade participants and various other representatives of our community.
Parade participants will then fall in again and march back to the High Street where some units will dismiss. The pipe band, SNIY, Standard Bearer and escort will then set off towards the Lothian & Borders Horse war memorial, where the parade will terminate. A further wreath laying ceremony will be held and participants may attend the Service in the Parish Church.
The Act of Remembrance:
Remembrance honours those who serve and have served to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life. We unite across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth. We pay tribute to the special contribution of families and of the emergency services. We acknowledge innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and acts of terrorism. Remembrance does not glorify war and its symbol, the red poppy, is a sign of both Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
We look forward to seeing you all on the day.
