Mahan Esfahani plays Bach Concertos
Mahan Esfahani’s final concert as our Artist in Residence is a spectacular tribute to JS Bach’s lavish gifts as a keyboard composer. His concertos for solo harpsichord are thought to have been arrangements of earlier works that he wrote while serving at the royal court of Köthen. Later, in Leipzig in the late 1730s, he seems to have written them out in a single manuscript, perhaps for performance in the concerts he directed at Zimmermann’s coffee house. Their richness of invention is matched by Carl Philipp Emanuel in his 12 Variations on the famous ‘Follia’ theme.

There is no questioning Esfahani's inquiring mind and absolute mastery of his instrument.
