Isla trained in journalism in London and, after suffering and recovering from a 40ft fall from the roof of a London building (another story!), worked as a sub editor on titles including OK! magazine, GQ, Arena, New Woman, and the Financial Times How To Spend It Magazine. After moving to Scotland in 2006 and having two children, she sub edited for the East Lothian Courier and The Scotsman, then completed a diploma in PR.

She stood for the Scottish Greens in the 2016 Scottish parliamentary elections but, after being diagnosed with breast cancer while in Japan, Isla returned to journalism and editing, first writing a memoir of her experience of breast cancer and its treatment, then launching Green Gables Editing in 2019. She also now offers her support voluntarily to cancer patients in East Lothian, running a cancer peer support group in North Berwick Library.
