It's time to honour our fierce and fearless town hero, Black Agnes! Expect live music and a lively celebration of our local women.

Join us on Sat Jun 10 2023 at 2:00 PM BST for the second year of The Black Agnes Festival at Dunbar Battery, Dunbar, EH42 1HY.

The festival is about celebrating the legacy of Black Agnes, a14th century Scottish icon who saved Dunbar from English capture. Get ready to learn about her story, be entertained by the musical talents of Dunbar women and friends - including two national award-winning acts, and even have your beautiful faces painted for good measure.

Musical Acts Include:

Finn Phillips - up and coming young singer/songwriter and acoustic guitar player from Dunbar.

Dunbar Sings - Dunbar's Community Choir. Formed January 2008, they sing pop, folk, Scottish, world and more.

Bee Asha - a spoken word artist who went to school in Dunbar, and one third of the Gal Group HipHop Trio, The Honey Farm. Between Rap and Poetry her work is a cathartic outlet that she uses to explore themes of sexuality, trauma and gender equality, characterised by an openness to talk about her lived experiences. In 2019 Asha starred in the BBC Documentary, Spit it Out and in 2021 she co-founded award winning charity, The Spit it Out Project, released her debut album ‘From Girl to Men’, won the Scottish Alternative Music Award’s best newcomer award and was featured in YWCA 30 under 30’s. This year Asha has been dubbed by BBC introducing ‘A Creative Powerhouse’, Showcased at New Skool Rules in Rotterdam and was highlighted in the List Hot 100. She is continuously working to create sustainable change in our cultures through raising awareness with her creative outlets.

Pocket Monica - the band of multi-instrumentalists and songwriters, Iona Zawinski and Erez Yotam Bertrand: a "genre-bending duo pairing middle eastern instrumentals with heavy synths and punchy beats." The List, Dec 2022. From busking on the streets of Leith, to winning Best Newcomer at the 2022 Scottish Alternative Music Awards, they've grown a unique sound centered around feminism, autistic experience, and recovery. Iona went to school in Dunbar and is co-chair of The Black Agnes Society.

Melissa Cairns - an accomplished local singer and guitarist with a beautiful voice tinged with Celtic tones.

There will also be a ceremony for this year's Black Agnes Award winners, where we will celebrate some special women doing inspiring work within the community.

Don't miss out on the chance to immerse yourself in Scottish culture and herstory. Bring your friends and family and let's make some memories!

Please note that this is an in-person event. The event is outside, open air, and accessible via ramp. Disabled toilet will be available onsite. No alcohol permitted on site. Dogs welcome. Family Friendly.

We can't wait to see you there!
